From the manufacturer
The NT1 is a revolutionary new 1" diaphragm condenser microphone from RØDE.
Although the body of the new NT1 closely resembles the NT1-A, the microphone has been completely redesigned from the ground up, with the only shared component being the mesh grille.
RØDE’s design engineers approached the NT1 as a marriage of innovation and tradition, starting with the capsule which is a completely new design. Codenamed the HF6, it is the perfect example of RØDE’s fusion of artistic design approaches and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, and features a sound signature reminiscent of the famous microphones of old while at the same time exhibiting extremely low noise.
It has been developed with a focus on detailed midrange response, coupled with silky smooth high frequencies, and warm, round, bass reproduction to make the NT1 an absolute standout in its class.
In another world-first for RØDE, the transducer itself is suspended inside the microphone using Rycote’s industry-leading Lyre system, minimizing external vibrations at the capsule level. The capsule is then married to high-grade electronics that have been designed to provide the lowest noise level of any studio microphone available. The NT1 is an incredibly quiet microphone, measuring only 4.5dBA of self-noise.
Its body is machined from 6061 aluminium and then nickel plated for resistance against corrosion. Finally it is coated in a durable, military-grade ceramic layer, using advanced electrostatic application techniques developed by RØDE to ensure an extremely hard wearing finish that is resistant to scratches or marks.
The NT1 is supplied with the SM6, a high-quality suspension shockmount that provides isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. It includes a removable pop shield with two axes of adjustment and a telescopic arm for ultimate application versatility.
The NT1 is designed and made in Australia.

This morning I sat in my car after recording the major track groups, with my laptop plugged into the aux input, so i can listen to real life audio system (what music get heard on most often) and also quickly compare to radio music. In 1/4 the time it usually takes to get satisfactory results i got the best mix i've ever done! Very straight forward. I'm shocked, thrilled, and rambling. When my wife listened to the mix she immediately said there's much more clarity and balance. This mic is GREAT. I'm gonna buy another when i save up the money so i can record in stereo..
PS. I recorded myself and my wife in one take with the NT1. We sing harmony, i play acoustic guitar, and she plays the cajon. It's a fun and surprisingly flexible and full sounding setup. We sounded better than i've ever heard recorded though the NT1.... smooth and transparent, yet the transients still had some punch. I've also got to say i'm super impressed with the iRig Pro. VERY satisfactory results.
The only BUT i had is the XLR cable that comes with it. It generates some buss (when I touch the connector that goes into the mic, the buss stops). Really unpleasant defect! I am using another XLR instead.
Top reviews from other countries
It is solidly built all around. It has good weight but that caused a bit of a problem for me. I want to use a desktop stand sometimes so I ordered one. But I discovered that it can't use it out of the box because it tips over from the weight of the mic. I'm a bit of a DIY guy so I already have a plan to modify it.
The included xlr cable is much too long for my needs. Luckily for me I have a short, good quality cable that I'm going to be using. Also, the pop filter's ring is made of plastic. Not that really makes any difference to me because it works just fine.
This is a fantastic mic... I highly recommend it.
P.s.- Do check the mic, cable and the shock mount after delivery. Amazon's packaging was so bad for this particular product. I had to replace 3 times. For the first time when I received the package, a duplicate XLR cable came out of it that was not working. So I replaced and second time after seeing the original cable, I came to know that the first one was duplicate. So match the photos given on Amazon to check if the product is original or not.
When I was looking for a new mic I read all the reviews and set my price limit quite low (no Neumanns). The nice thing about this mic is that although I may choose other mics for a different sound (SM57, SM58, SM81 SE Z3300A are all in my cupboard and lots of cheapies discarded and sold) it will make a useable result on everything I have tried so far (vocals, electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, small percussion). Not only that, and most important to me is that the sounds combine in a mix without too much effort and even sounds that are mixed low are still audible. It does this very well.
I like the shock-mount / pop screen - it works well and seems reasonably robust.
The physical weight is sort of middly - feels robust without always needing an upgraded stand.
The sound doesn't get too boomy or scatchy, - boosting either bass or treble or both, results in warm true bass and / or clean silky tops.
My voice comes out very natural and eqs well to match the mix.
Acoustic guitar - I find the mic can be placed close to the strings or body without picking up string slides or too much boom.
Off-axis sounds stay quite natural.
10 year warranty when registered - how many other manufacturers would risk that?
Less good - very little really
Picks up room and outside noise more than dynamic mics but that is only to be expected.
The shock-mount mounting ring isnt captive so I'll be careful not to loose it.
It would have been better to have a plastic box for storage.
Doesnt make me sing in tune!!
Summary - Great mic certainly for the money which I'm sure will stay at the ready nearly all the time. A good first do-it-all mic and if I had only £200 to spend it would be a toss up between this and an SM57 and SM58 combo.
The low noise is great for me coupled with the sensitivity. Not having a perfectly quiet booth, I can get away with it as I don’t need to bump up the gain as much as other mics.
For me there is something about condenser microphones for voice over and vocals. To my ears they just sound better then anything else. The NT1 is a microphone I can use for my lifetime I hope. It’s great on my voice but that will be something for each person to weigh up. I suspect though for anyone serious about recording it’s a valuable option to have at the price especially if it’s your first and if you already have a few. I’m raving about this microphone, extremely pleased.
The supplied shock mount is good! I do prefer the SMR which I have. However the SM6 is fantastic too. Just a bit too heavy for me. SM6 is 660g and the SMR is a third of that. They are both good and it’ll just come down to your preference and use case. The SM6 will withstand more crash and bash, but both isolate the mic just fine. The SM6 is probably a tad better at isolation.
Note it comes with a 10 year warranty which requires an invoice to register and the retailer Harris technology provided the invoice without any delay or trouble as it’s not automated through Amazon the app sends a message to the retailer requesting and they were super responsive
